Phoenix runs no single city impound lot. Where your car sits depends on which police zone removed it. Here is the path.

Step 1: Call or visit Phoenix PD Vehicle Impound Unit

  • Address: 100 W. Washington St., Phoenix, AZ 85003
  • Phone: (602) 495-2096
  • Hours: about 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday
  • The unit confirms your impound and tells you which zone contractor yard has the car.

Step 2: Pay the state admin fee

  • Bring a valid photo ID, current registration or title, and proof of insurance if you have it.
  • Pay $150 by cash, cashier’s check, or money order under ARS 28-3513 B.
  • The unit gives you a release form.

Step 3: Pick up the car

  • Take the release form to the assigned zone contractor yard.
  • Pay the tow charge and storage ($25 per day maximum under ARS 28-3511) directly to the yard.
  • The yard cannot release the car without the police release form.

Other Valley cities run their own release counters. Mesa: Mesa Police HQ, 59 S. Hibbert, (480) 644-6080. Chandler: Downtown Precinct, 250 E. Chicago St., (480) 782-4109. Glendale: Tow Administration, 6835 N. 57th Dr., (623) 930-3255. Scottsdale: McKellips Station, 7601 E. McKellips Rd.

Frequently asked questions

I was not driving. Why is my car at a yard?

If the registered owner had a suspended privilege, no insurance, or another ARS 28-3511 trigger, the officer can impound even if someone else was behind the wheel.

Can someone else pick up my car for me?

Yes, with a signed authorization, a copy of your photo ID, and the release form. Yard policies vary. Call the assigned yard ahead.

What if I just got a ticket and was not towed?

This guide covers actual impounds. For a citation, follow the printed instructions on the ticket or contact the court named on it.

How long does Phoenix hold a car?

At least 20 days under ARS 28-3511. Storage accrues at $25 per day. After 20 days the yard moves to lien or sale. See what happens if you don’t pick up your car.

Can I find out online which yard has my car?

Not directly. Call the Phoenix PD Vehicle Impound Unit at (602) 495-2096 during business hours. Have your plate number and the impound date ready.
