To junk a car in Arizona, sign over the title through ADOT MVD and surrender the license plates. The state has no periodic safety inspection. Only the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas require emissions testing.

Step 1: Decide what you are doing

  • Selling to a salvage yard or scrap yard: the yard files the title paperwork and pays you.
  • Donating: the charity files the title paperwork and acknowledges the donation.
  • Selling parts yourself: you keep the title until the last part is gone, then sign it over.

Step 2: Sign the title over

  • Sign the back of the Arizona title to the buyer (or charity). Print the odometer reading and the date of sale.
  • Remove the license plates. Plates belong to you, not the car. Return them to ADOT MVD or transfer them to another vehicle.
  • File a Notice of Transfer or Sale with ADOT MVD. This releases you from liability for the vehicle after the sale.

Step 3: Salvage title (if applicable)

  • If an insurance company totaled the car, it gets a salvage title in Arizona.
  • To put a salvage vehicle back on the road, it needs a restored title and a Level III VIN inspection.
  • The Level III inspection fee was not confirmed in our research. Confirm the current amount with ADOT MVD before you pay.

What Arizona does not require

  • No periodic safety inspection.
  • No smog check outside Phoenix and Tucson metro areas.
  • VIN inspections are for salvage, not for routine registration.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a smog check to junk a car?

No. A smog check is only for active registration in the Phoenix or Tucson metro areas. A car you are junking no longer needs registration, so no smog check is required.

What happens to the license plates?

Plates stay with you. Return them to ADOT MVD or transfer them to another vehicle you own. Do not leave plates on a junked car.

Can I junk a car without a title?

Not through ADOT MVD. The title is the chain of ownership. Without it, the salvage yard or charity usually cannot accept the car. A bonded title process exists for missing titles but is separate.

Is there a fee to junk a car?

The state does not charge a fee to surrender a title. The buyer (salvage yard or charity) handles the filing. The Level III VIN inspection fee for salvage was not confirmed in our research.

Do I need to notify ADOT myself?

Yes. File a Notice of Transfer or Sale with ADOT MVD after the sale. This releases you from liability for the vehicle after the sale date.
